Tony Of Arabia Earns $43M As Advisor To Kuwait, While Getting Paid By Morgan Stanley And The UN

(And they say crime doesn't pay!)

Life is a party for Tony Blair, who left the UK at the top and has gone on to make an absolute fortune as a consultant.

Last night it was claimed by Kuwaiti sources that the former PM was paid $42.5 million this year for advising the government, according to Daily Mail. His firm Tony Blair Associates prepared a report called "Kuwait 2035" earlier this year.

Blair spokespeople deny being paid that much.

Now lets run over a few other consulting gigs nabbed by Tony Blair. First, he earned $640,000 last year as the UN peace envoy to the Middle East, paid primarily by British tax payers.

Second he was hired in 2008 as a consultant to Morgan Stanley, worth $3.2 million a year. Third he earned $800,000 a year as a consultant to Zurich, a Swiss company, according to The Times Of London.

Then there's speaking fees, worth as much as $500,000 an outing.

Commodity Price Surge Sets Stage For Global Food Crisis In New Year

By Barry Grey

31 December, 2010
WSWS.org

The price of traded food staples such as wheat, corn and rice soared 26 percent from June to November, nearing the peaks reached during the global food crisis of 2008, according to the Food Price Index kept by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization.

The price surge has continued in December, with foodstuffs and basic commodities hitting new highs and expected to climb further in 2011.

In 2008, riots broke out in at least a dozen countries as food prices hit record highs. The new surge in prices promises to unleash even greater hunger and deprivation, and more widespread social unrest, as hundreds of millions of people around the world contend with the impact of the ongoing recession and government austerity measures.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, 925 million people worldwide suffered from hunger in 2010, an increase of about 150 million since 1995-97. One third of children in the so-called developing world are malnourished.

The new explosion in commodity prices is being fueled by the cheap credit policies of governments and central banks in Europe, Japan and, above all, the United States, where core short-term interest rates remain near zero. These policies, most critically the renewed turn by the US Federal Reserve to so-called “quantitative easing,” are designed to boost national stock markets and business profits by providing the banks and corporations with virtually free credit.

The Federal Reserve in November announced that it would purchase $600 billion in US Treasury securities by, in effect, printing dollars. This cheap-dollar policy has the effect of debasing the world’s primary trading and reserve currency, thereby fueling inflationary tendencies around the world and increasing the flow of hot money to emerging economies with faster growth and higher interest rates.

The impact is vastly destabilizing and exacerbates global economic imbalances. It also provides banks, hedge funds and corporations with wide vistas for speculation on commodity prices.

In the US alone, corporations and banks are sitting on some $3 trillion in cash which they refuse to invest in production and hiring. A good portion of the global surfeit of cash is being used to ramp up the prices of commodities―from oil, copper, cotton, gold and silver to food staples such as wheat, corn, rice and soybeans.

Natural disasters are also playing a role. Drought in the Black Sea region cut Russia's wheat harvest by a third this year. Unusually hot and dry weather in Argentina and other Latin American crop exporting nations is threatening to further reduce the volume of corn, wheat and soybeans on world markets.

Such natural factors, however, are exacerbated by the impact of national divisions on the global economy. Russia responded to the failure of its crop by imposing an export ban on wheat. Similarly, India has imposed an export ban on onions. The effect of such measures is to increase the upward pressure on prices worldwide.

A major factor in the rise in corn prices is the diversion of a third of US corn production to the more profitable production of ethanol in 2010.

On the global commodity markets, wheat and corn have increased almost 50 percent over last year. Wheat prices soared to their highest level in over two years this week. US soybean futures have been rising rapidly since August, and corn ends the year at a 29-month high.

As the Wall Street Journal reported on December 24, “Traders are also anticipating that index funds will pour more money into agricultural commodities at the start of the year, pushing prices higher, analysts said.”

Alberto Weisser, chief executive of US-based Bunge, one of the biggest traders of commodities such as soybeans, told the Financial Times (December 29) that tight grain conditions would continue into the next year. “For the next 12 months,” he said, “I think you will see volatility of prices.”

Overall, world commodity prices have risen by 25 percent over the past six months. The European debt crisis and the Federal Reserve's cheap-dollar policy have, according to the Journal (December 27), “driven investors to hard assets.”

Oil is now at $90 a barrel, nearing a 26-month high. The sharp increase in oil prices drives up transport costs for food and other commodities.

In the US, prices of gasoline at the pump are now averaging over $3 a gallon nationwide, according to the American Automobile Association. This is an increase of 20 cents from just last month and over 40 cents from a year ago.

Speaking Wednesday on the CBS network's “Early Show,” former Shell Oil President John Hofmeister warned that gas could climb to $5 a gallon by 2012.

US copper prices reached a record for the second straight day on Tuesday. Copper is up 13 percent in December alone and 57 percent since June 7.

Gold pushed above $1,400 an ounce this week, near its record high. It is up 26 percent this year.

Highlighting the role of speculation in the commodity surge, the Wall Street Journal on Monday published a front-page article on the staggering rise in the price of silver. In the past four months, the precious metal has risen 51 percent to a series of 30-year highs, before inflation. It closed last week at $29.31 a troy ounce, as compared to $16.822 at the beginning of 2010―a rise of 74 percent.

Of the general surge in commodity prices, the Journal wrote: “Prices are rising despite over-supply and a lackluster recovery in industrial demand. Many analysts expected those factors would keep a lid on prices in 2010. What they didn't expect was an overwhelming flow of money into the market from investors eager to ride a commodity rally.”

The newspaper quoted Stephen Briggs, senior metals strategist at BNP Paribas, as saying, “This is a story almost entirely about investment.”

The inflationary impact of Washington's cheap-dollar policy is being felt most directly in the so-called “emerging economies,” led by China. Speculative cash from the West is wreaking havoc on prices of Chinese goods and, above all, housing costs. Housing prices in the US peaked at 6.4 times average earnings this decade. In Beijing, housing prices are 22 times average earnings.

In an attempt to stem inflation―Chinese consumer prices rose 5.1 percent in November―the People's Bank of China on Saturday announced its second interest rate hike in 10 weeks. This poses the threat of a slowdown in China's economic growth, which, under conditions of anemic growth in the US, Europe and Japan, has been the major factor in averting a relapse to negative economic growth worldwide.

The rise in food prices, which brings immense profits for agribusiness and speculators and untold suffering for millions of ordinary people, underscores the irrational and socially destructive nature of the capitalist market and production for profit.

Birth Defects In Fallujah Linked To US assault (Video + Report)

"Since 2003, congenital malformations have increased to account for 15% of all births in Fallujah, Iraq. Congenital heart defects have the highest incidence, followed by neural tube defects. Similar birth defects were reported in other populations exposed to war contaminants. While the causes of increased prevalence of birth defects are under investigation, we opted to release this communication to contribute to exploration of these issues. By using a questionnaire, containing residential history and activities that may have led to exposure to war contaminants, retrospective reproductive history of four polygamous Fallujah families were documented. Our findings point to sporadic, untargeted events, with different phenotypes in each family and increased recurrence. The prevalence of familial birth defects after 2003 highlights the relevance of epigenetic mechanisms and offers insights to focus research, with the aim of reducing further damage to people’s health."

Wake Up Ya Muslimeen!!!

Shocker??? Home Prices Dropped Unexpectedly

With unemployment mired at 9.8 percent, the housing market is hinged upon the job market. "The economy has to recover for the housing market to recover, not the other way around," said Patrick Newport, an economist with IHS Global Insight.
Homes remain a major part of many Americans' wealth -- households held $6.4 trillion of home equity at the end of the third quarter, according to a Federal Reserve report.
"It's unfortunate because a lot of families have all their wealth in their house, all their savings," said Sinai. "Household spending in general is hurt. There's a restraint on consumer spending."
The latest data has led some to predict that home prices are headed for a double-dip.
"The double-dip is almost here [...] There is no good news in October's report,"
David M. Blitzer, the Chairman of the Index Committee at S&P said in a press release. "Home prices across the country continue to fall. The trends we have seen over the past few months have not changed."

"These officials are spies for the US in their countries," Assange said in the second part of his interview with Arab television network Al Jazeera. He said the leaked documents in his possession show that Arab officials reveal sensitive information on their colleagues and respective countries.

The WikiLeaks founder said the website would consider exposing the names of the Arab officials only if it would be certain it would not lead to their death.

Assange warned that the revelations may lead to dangerous coups in the Arab world. He added that WikiLeaks plans to reveal some 7,000 documents related to Egypt and its president, Hosni Mubarak.

Other leaked documents, he said, reveal information on the oil industry in the Arab world over the past few decades.

To the Ummah of Islam

(source link)
Our precious Ummah: you are the best nation brought forth to the people enjoining the good and forbidding evil.  O Ummah of Islam, O Ummah of  daring, how happy I was when you stood up for your Lord, and emerged from  your silence to defend your Prophet – peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

How the blood of the monotheists of Gaza mingled with your tears O Ummah. How happy we were when you prayed for us, and we saw the effects of this clearly on the battle ground.  Because of you, Allah delivered us from bombing and gunfire so that I said to some of my brothers once: Do not doubt that this is because of some old woman praying for us.

Imam al-Bukhari said in his book of Jihad in his Sahih: Chapter: The One Who Asks for the Help of the Weak and Righteous in War: Ibn ‘Abbas said, Abu Sufyan related to  me: Caesar said to me, I asked you whether the nobles of the people or the weak ones  followed him (Muhammad) and you said that the humble people followed him.  They are always the ones that followed the messengers.  And after that he narrated the Hadith of Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: Are you not given victory and sustenance because of the weak among you?‛

Ibn Hajar said, when he explained this chapter (The One Who Asks for the  Help of the Weak and Righteous in war) that (this means) their blessings and  prayers.  And he explained the hadith (‚Are you not given victory and sustenance because of the weak among you?‛) in the al-Nisa’I narration, saying that Allah has championed this Ummah because of its people’s weakness, supplications, prayers and sincerity.  And he had a witness in al-Nisa’I and Ahmad of the Hadith of Abu Darda for the words‚ “You are given victory and sustenance because of your weak ones.”  Ibn Battal said, ‚The interpretation of the Hadith is that the weak are more sincere in their prayers and more humble in their worship because their hearts are empty of attachment to the vanities of this world‛. Then he added, ‚If the strong one is ascendant because of his bravery than the weak is ascendant because of his prayers and sincerity‛.  Here ends the words of this witness, may Allah have mercy on him.

Yes, O my Ummah, having sympathy with us, praying for us and all the  Mujahideen and before them our prisoners and oppressed are among the duties  of required faithful fraternity in these times in which iniquity  has prevailed.   However, come my Ummah and reflect upon our ailments more if Allah is to cure them.

O my Ummah have you heard the call
And heard my voice crying in the desert
For your sake the patient has stolen my cure
And thrown the garb of sorrow over my clothing

~Abu Qhandahar al-Zarqawi

Abu Umar as-Sayf: ''You will not see scholars teaching Muslims in the field of Jihad''

Guidance and Misguidance

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions, and grant them Peace.

Indeed the support and help come through the Quran and sword.

Allah, the Most High says:

"Certainly We sent Our apostles with clear arguments, and sent down with them the Book and the balance that men may conduct themselves with equity; and We have made the iron, wherein is great violence and advantages to men, and that Allah may know who helps Him and His apostles in the secret; surely Allah is Strong, Mighty".
(The Holy Quran, Surah 57. "The Iron", verse 25)

This is the path that was chosen by the companions who followed the Book of Allah and were obedient on Armed Jihad; this is the reason why Allah has purified their faith and granted them victories on the battlefields.

Allah, the Most High says:

"Allah has promised to those of you who believe and do good that He will most certainly make them rulers in the earth as He made rulers those before them, and that He will most certainly establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and that He will most certainly, after their fear, give them security in exchange; they shall serve Me, not associating aught with Me; and whoever is ungrateful after this, these it is who are the transgressors".
(The Holy Quran, Surah 24. "The Light", verse 55)

Later, when the practice of the Book and Armed Jihad was brought to a stall, the power of Muslims had dramatically declined.

Wherever the banner of Jihad was set, you already see Mujahideen are in a hurry to go there, searching for martyrdom, wherever it could be found. You could see very few among them who had spent some time studying in the past. But you will not see among them scholars who would advise the Mujahideen to strengthen their faith.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him, and grant him Peace, said:

"A group of people from my Ummah will continue to fight in defense of truth and remain triumphant until the Day of Judgment".

One of the indications of the weakness of the Ummah and its deviation from the description of the Victorious Group today is the fact that there are very few well learned who are fighting in the fields of Jihad.

The revival of Armed Jihad, which the Ummah experiences today, is a right time for the seekers of the true knowledge to make a step towards Hijrah and Jihad on the path of Allah, because He, the Most High says:

"And whoever flies in Allah's way, he will find in the earth many a place of refuge and abundant resources, and whoever goes forth from his house flying to Allah and His Apostle, and then death overtakes him, his reward is indeed with Allah and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful".
(The Holy Quran, Surah 4. "The Women", verse 100)

October 7 is Continuation of December 27- Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

31 years ago, on 27 December, the Red Army of the former Soviet Union invaded the land of the Muslim Afghan people by violating its sanctity. They resorted to committing genocide, torture and oppression against the miserable people of Afghanistan soon after that.  For ten years, they had been carrying out brutalities and atrocities.  But with the help of Allah (SwT) and the sacrifices of 1.5 million  Afghans,  the Red Army was  forced to pull out of Afghanistan. Not only that. Many Muslim and non-Muslim countries which  were chafing under the yoke of communism for many decades, found their independence once more. Thus the empire of atheism broke into smithereens.
Today the former Soviet union is no more thanks to the Jihad of the Afghans, nor traces of the Warsaw military pact exist but despite that, Afghanistan has  been burning in the flames of war, notwithstanding the colossal sacrifices of 1.5 million martyrs of the Afghan people, immigration of 6 million Afghans and many millions becoming disabled, handicapped, with women becoming widows and mothers losing their sons.
This time NATO under the leadership of America have invaded Afghanistan by dent of 150,000 troops. They have unleashed atrocities and brutalities on the Afghans  since 7 October 2001;  have martyred more than 200,000 Afghans; have tortured hundreds of thousands of Afghans in prisons in Afghanistan and other countries.  This spell of brutality has still been continuing.
Yesterday, the former Soviet Union’s Red Army had occupied our country under the tutelage of Warsaw Pact but today the Americans have taken the land of the Afghans as hostage under the arrangement of NATO. Yesterday, the Russians  claimed,  there was a foreign interference in Afghanistan and called the armed opposition as the mischief-makers  but today America calls her invasion of Afghanistan as a war on terror and calls the armed opposition as terrorists. Yesterday,  the Russians had usurped the freedom and our national independence and used to determine the fate of Afghanistan in the corridors of Kremlin but today,  the Americans have left the Russians behind in their brazenness to clasp the fate of Afghanistan in their reprehensible tentacles. The fate of Afghanistan is determined in Washington, London and Bruxel.   Yesterday a flag had been hoisted on the presidential palace in Kabul which was claimed to be the flag of Afghanistan and today another stooge flag is fluttering on the presidential palace. The Russians said,  their presence in Afghanistan had not negated the independence  of Afghanistan.
American and NATO officials claim the presence of 150,000 troops and the current brutalities unleashed by them to be the  signs of their friendship and  sympathy. They do not consider the presence of troops as a foreign force. A few elements who are Afghans by name only, called the Russian forces as being the friends of Afghanistan in an effort to support their presence in the country. Today, some debased elements who are Afghans by name condone the presence of thousands of soldiers of America and NATO. They  are trying  to find a palatable interpretation for the callous military operations, aerial bombardment, detentions and violation of the Afghan values. The invading Americans carve out justifiable pretexts for these atrocities.  But the Russians including the Warsaw Pact along with their tactics and strategies, brutalities, surrogates like Khalq and Parchm failed to afford constantly facing the Mujahid Afghan people but received a historical defeat. Their mastership at world level came to an end. Today, the Americans are following the footsteps of the former Soviet Union and  hovering over the  moribund edge of erosion--their strength played out, their arrogance is on the collapse and  their ambitions of mastership debilitating. They are seeking a way out of the country.
While condemning  both the invaders and their lackeys of the 27 December and showing our deep resentments in this regard, we pay our deep tribute to the sacrifices of the Afghan Mujahid people. We believe October 7 was continuation   of December 27 invasion. The Americans and NATO will face the fate of the former Soviet Union and the world will be saved from their claws of mischief-making and colonialism.
--Black be the faces of the invaders and the puppets of the invasions both of 27 December and 7 October.

The Future of "Saudi" Arabia

To Whom Is Your Allegiance? by Abu Taubah

Bailouts, Stocks and Bonds: Halal or Haram? by Abu Taubah

Joseph Stieglitz, Dani Rodrick and more at the 50th anniversary of the Center for Development Economics at Williams College 10/2010

Note: This is not an endorsement of any view, just an effort to facilitate education and promote an interesting discourse centered around economic development as we continue to steer away from principles and into specifics over time.

This first video discusses what "economic development" is from a contemporary perspective, the flaw being that GDP cannot measure distribution of wealth. Simple measures of economic growth do not show who is benefiting from that growth. At least they include the Human Development Index, but we should certainly have our own, still the discrepancies are astonishing:

NATO goals in Afghanistan doomed to failure if night raids continue

by Xinhua writer Yan Liang
KABUL, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- The goals of NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan seemed doomed to failure if night raid, a tactic commonly used by ISAF in the war-torn country, continues, because it was turning local people against them, observers told Xinhua Tuesday.
Last Friday night, two Afghan employees of a private commercial company in Kabul namely Tiger International were killed by NATO- led troops. ISAF later said that the operation was coordinated with Afghan security forces after they received information that the security of US embassy in Afghanistan was threatened.
However, many local Afghan people still doubted if it was really a coordinated operation, and they were infuriated by the fact that it was two security guards rather than Taliban who were killed in the incident.
The raids were considered by NATO troops to be effective to root out Taliban insurgents, but it angered Afghan civilians. Local people want to see an end to night raids, Waheed Mujda, a political analyst at the Afghan Research Center for Strategy Studies, told Xinhua.
"Night raids cause a great problem for Afghan people, especially for women and children, not only frightens them during their sleep, but also gives them a great psychological pressure," said Mujda.
In some cases, according to him, innocent civilians were killed during night raids due to wrong intelligence, and local people sometimes gave ISAF wrong information to carry out night raids for their own purposes, for example to take revenge or settle feuds.
Due to civilian casualties caused by night raids, public support had dramatically eroded for the NATO mission in many areas of Afghanistan, observers said.
It would be counterproductive, and family members who lost relatives would join Taliban to avenge the NATO soldiers, said Mujda, "When innocent civilians were hurt by coalition operations, the Taliban wins."
The use of dogs in house searches was unacceptable in the Afghan culture and it would be used by Taliban to undermine grass root support for the coalition and the Afghan government.
"We Afghan people do not like these night raids, they broke our tradition and not consider our feelings," said a local driver Abdullah in Kabul, "unless the night raids stopped, we would fight against them."
Night raid has already become a contentious issue for ISAF and the Afghan people, which may doom their mission here if it continues, local observers warned.

Know Your Rights If The FBI/JTTF Comes Knocking At Your Door

Sayyid Qutb: “And the Jews And Christians Will Never Be Pleased With You…”

“You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers to be the Jews and those who associate others with Allah..." (Al-Maa’idah 5:82)

By the martyr insh’Allah, Sayyid Qutb (rahimahullaah)

“…so, this is their real problem. They do not lack the clear proofs, nor do they lack convincing arguments from you that you are upon the truth, and that what has come to you from your Lord is the truth. You can present to them whatever you wish, and you can be kind to them as much as you wish, but none of this will please them in the least.

They will be pleased by one thing and one thing only: that you follow their ways and abandon what you are upon of the truth.

It is this eternal ‘aqeedah whose confirmation we see in every time and place…it is this belief that is the essence and reality of the battle that the Jews and Christians are inciting against the Muslim jama’ah in every land and in every era. It is the battle of belief that has reared its head, between the camp of Islam and these two camps that occasionally differ and quarrel between each other. They differ in the secondary aspects of the same creed that is common between them, but when it comes to fighting Islam and the Muslims, they are always in complete agreement!

Verily, it is the battle of beliefs, in its essence and reality. However, the two camps that are in enmity towards Islam and the Muslims apply various names to this battle, and they raise above it various banners – all out of evil and deceit. They experienced the zeal of the Muslims towards their religion and belief when they faced them under the banner of ‘aqeedah. As a result, the stubborn enemies changed the banner of the fight. They no longer announce it as a battle in the name of belief – which is what it really is – out of fear of the surging zeal that would be evoked if they did so. Rather, they announce it in the name of land, economics, politics, military bases, etc., and they throw into the minds of the heedless ones among us that the issue of belief has become a thing of the past, having no relevance today, and that we should not raise a banner and fight in its name! This is the characteristic of these idiotic blind followers.

They do all of this to protect themselves from the surging zeal that would be unleashed for the sake of this belief, even though – between themselves – the international Zionists, Crusaders, and Communists all plot this battle first and foremost to destroy this solid boulder that they have been nudging for a long time, and which will destroy them all in the end!

Verily, it is a battle of beliefs. It is not a battle over land, crops, military bases, or any of these other empty banners. They impose these concepts on us out of an alterior motive: in order to deceive and distract us from the reality and nature of the battle. So, if we are deceived by this deception of theirs, and we distance ourselves from Allah’s guiding of His Prophet and Ummah in this regard, then we have nobody to blame but ourselves, as He is the most Truthful of speakers:

“And the Jews and Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their way…” (Al-Baqarah, 2:120)

So, this is the only price that they are willing to accept. Anything else will be rejected and pushed back.”

World Tired of Paying Bill for US Military

Nice Summary of Shariah Compliant Industry's Present State

Toby Birch, Managing director, Oppenheim & Co. Limited, Guernsey; gives an insight into Islamic banking.

Anyone with even a passing interest in Islam will be struck by the common sense and simplicity of its message.  As a non-Muslim this is most striking when visiting any mosque and witnessing the relative informality of the clerical structure during prayers. If one delves deeper into its economic lessons then similar themes appear. It soon becomes apparent that there is profound wisdom and age-old understanding of human behaviour. Westerners struggle to comprehend why interest is a problem and shrug it off as a religious idiosyncrasy. However, there is nothing superstitious about refuting the use of usury. The UK will be spending more on interest than it does on defence in 2011 while the entire Euro currency block wavers under the weight of debt; exactly who is being irrational by urging its avoidance? Some smug commentators lump gold bugs and the ‘interest-free crowd’ into the same category, implying they are somehow unsophisticated. As one who is associated with both bullion and Islamic Finance, I would appear to be firmly wedged in that pigeonhole.
We are now all-too-familiar with the tale of the Emperor’s New Clothes, post-2008. The children’s fable reminds us of our reticence to ask simple questions for fear of sounding stupid. It sometimes takes the naïve or innocent to bare the obvious (pun fully intended). Similar demands must be made of the Islamic Finance industry, especially in its formative years. Recent reports claim that the asset base of such institutions is set to hit $1.5 trillion in 2012. It is difficult to determine how such forecasts are derived given the wide variety of data sources for each industry sub-set. The total may well be swelled by the accumulation of petro-dollars at Islamic banks alongside the issuance of sukuk (bonds) plus takaful (insurance) business. While the numbers are impressive and the growth rates likewise, one wonders whether such bank deposits are actually doing anything useful for the wider economy or simply stagnating and devaluing with the dilution of the US dollar. Perhaps the real numbers to look at are those of penetration rates.  There are 80 million Egyptians, most of whom are Muslim, and more in Indonesia, yet Islamic finance is an after thought. Few institutions have a regional strategy, let alone international presence, to enable distribution.
Given the history of Islam, one would expect its financial system to be a grass-roots phenomenon. After all, the religion was propagated by word of mouth, assisted by the example set by Muslim traders, known for their honesty and fair dealing. However, the modern industry has a hard, institutional feel to it. Western investment banks are drawn by the hefty corporate finance fees on big sukuk bond issues. There is minimal appetite for offering retail financial services. Small but sincere fund providers struggle to afford the extra costs of Islamic compliance. Large institutions argue that if one cannot afford a single scholar for your fund’s fatwa, let alone an entire Sharia Board, then hard luck, that’s the market rate. Their wealth management arms have also attempted to milk money from the wealthy in the Middle East, offering Islamic-looking funds catering for exotic and esoteric themes. The average fund size is apparently around $30m so it would appear their uptake has been unspectacular.  It is tough to track both the size and performance of such vehicles as the data is often the preserve of subscription-only services. The open qualities that spurred the spread of Islam appear to be lacking in its implementation. Another missing aspect is the simplicity, especially if one has ploughed through a Prospectus with a dizzying array of arrows on transactional diagrams. It is reminiscent of the illustrations for mortgage backed securities that supposedly proved their high credit ratings.
Institutions can rightly counter that the retail approach has struggled, citing the example of the Islamic Bank of Britain, requiring on-going funding from its shareholders. Like all modern businesses, scale is essential to compete with interest-based banking services. This is why Islamic retail banking requires more than just a large pool of Muslims to succeed; the customers need to have money to deposit as well. This allows banks to upsell services which are more profitable for both the institution and customers alike, and ultimately more useful for the wider economy. These are in the form of restricted and unrestricted accounts that allow greater flexibility for risk and reward. Ultimately this ‘equity’ approach is the most economically useful activity a bank can perform. It reduces systemic risk and counters the inflationary effect of credit creation. There is huge demand for borrowing by SME’s (small to medium sized enterprises) that cannot find finance. Even when secured, credit is offered at extortionate margins by the interest-based lenders. The tragedy for western economies is that SME’s generate the jobs but are being starved of financial fuel. For too-big-to-fail banks, the bail-out has been the greatest coup of the century. A generation of tax payers will have to fund their liabilities with none of the benefits. Like an implanted cuckoo, our banking system acts like a sibling but is really a parasite that gorges our food and throws us out of the nest once they’ve outgrown us. The government, like the host parents of the innocent bird, is tricked into feeding the invader until they are exhausted by its constant demands.
There are also enormous barriers from regulators, mainly in the form of the Basel Accords that encourage debt rather than equity-based assets by their very nature. The old Latin maxim of ‘who guards the guards’ springs to mind when considering such decrees. The proponents of usury permeate every institution, designing laws to protect bond holders and receivers of interest over those who take greater risk in the form of equity. There are also benign barriers to Islamic banking, even in tolerant countries like Canada whose regulators want banking availability for all religions, not just Muslims.  Perhaps the religious tag needs to be replaced with an ethical one to widen its appeal and palatability. After all, the avoidance of usury is not just common sense but is also a common theme for People of the Book (a term encompassing several other religions).
One would expect to see leadership in the Middle East where retail banking has more potential for significant success. However, Malaysia appears to be taking pole position with greater uptake for Islamic products and services. Just like any other service, the benefits of Islamic finance needs to be sold to customers. It cannot depend on duty or devoutness alone, especially when customers pay a higher price for the privilege. After all, why should individuals invest according to Sharia values when Muslim countries’ Sovereign Wealth Funds fail to do so? Using these principals for investment and business transactions is not just the right thing to do but is beneficial for the economy and investors alike. It avoids the destabilising effect of derivatives and leverage while enhancing genuine yield generation and sustainability of the equity approach.
While recognising the need for capital markets one should not overlook the fact that institutional money is ultimately sourced from mass market deposits, pensions, insurance and investments. This stable source of capital could provide some of the liquidity and long-term funds Islamic banks are desperate for. Will a retail revolution arise in 2011? Probably not, if 2010 is anything to go by. We will likely endure another year of sponsor-driven conferences with their euphemisms, tales of growth paradigms and fancy funds. Like their western counterparts, some Islamic financiers want a speedy return to business as usual, finding formulae to mimic an interest-based – and ultimately self-destructive - system. Islam is the oldest yet the latest thing whose tenets stand firm as generations come and go.  The lack of consumer empowerment has allowed the industry to follow fashion, dictating trends from the top; it would be wonderful for Islamic finance to flourish organically from the bottom-up.
